Vermont Man Dies Of Uncontrollable Bleeding, Daughter Files Lawsuit Against Xarelto
June 06, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on the details of a lawsuit filed in Vermont against the makers of Xarelto, Bayer AG and Janssen Pharmaceuticals a subsidiary company of the Johnson and Johnson Corporation. The plaintiff’s father died from an excessive brain bleeding episode resulting from an unexpected injury he sustained. Although her father had only been taking Xarelto for a brief period, the daughter is claiming that her father’s use of Xarelto precipitated the fatal brain bleed and ultimately caused his death, which doctors attributed to parenchymal hemorrhage, a type of intracerebral hemorrhage.
The plaintiff’s father was using Xarelto as a treatment for his atrial fibrillation, a heart condition that is usually treated with blood thinners as a preventative measure. Atrial fibrillation can potentially cause an increased risk of blood clots or stroke.
The plaintiff also alleges in her court papers that at the time of her father’s unfortunate demise, Xarelto had no accompanying antidote to help to prevent the uncontrollable bleeding. Traditional blood thinners, such as warfarin, have been released on the market along with an antidote that can counteract the blood thinner’s effects thus allowing blood clots to form to stop the bleeding. Vitamin K is usually used by doctors for this purpose. In this case, doctors had nothing to treat the plaintiff’s father with as an antidote since there was none available other than life-saving surgery or blood transfusions to prevent her father from bleeding out.
Many other lawsuits have been filed across the country against the drug’s manufacturers, most of which have been consolidated into a Multidistrict Litigation (MDL 2592) and a mass tort program in Philadelphia, PA since all of them involve the same defendants and have very similar claims related to uncontrollable bleeding. The MDL involves 2,800 cases, while the tort program involves 550 cases.
