The funeral directors who work with Martin Oaks Cemetery and Crematory, Inc. are proud to honor United States veterans in Ft. Worth Texas and surrounding areas. They organize Military Funeral Honors ceremonies that the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs offers including the folding and presenting of the U.S. flag to the veteran’s family and the playing of Taps either by a bugler or via a quality recorded version. The service is performed by a funeral honors detail made up of at least two people from the Armed Forces. At least one member of the funeral honors detail will be from the branch of the military in which the departed veteran served. There are three kinds of Funeral Honors that may be rendered: Full Military Honors, 7 Person Detail or a Standard Honors Team Detail. The type given is decided by the veteran’s status. In addition to arranging for Funeral Military Honors, the funeral directors who work with Martin Oaks Cemetery and Crematory, Inc. can also assist families in obtaining a free government headstone, grave marker or niche marker from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). VA provides such memorial merchandise as a headstone or marker for the unmarked grave of any deceased eligible veteran in any cemetery, whatever the date of death. For those eligible who passed away on November 1, 1990 or after that date, VA may also furnish a headstone or marker for graves that are already marked. Flat markers come in granite, marble and bronze, and standing headstones are in granite or marble. The chosen style must be in harmony with the monuments already at the place of burial. As of the spring of 2009, applicants also have the option of obtaining a new device. Cemetery officials will order the headstone or marker based upon the inscription information provided by the next of kin or authorized representative in instances where burial is in a national cemetery, state veterans’ cemetery or military post/base cemetery.

Please know that although the headstone or marker is supplied free of charge, the applicant is responsible for its placement and setting fees.

VA will also give a free American flag to drape the casket or accompany the urn of a deceased veteran who served honorably. The flag is typically given after the funeral to the next of kin to serve as a keepsake. Displaying the flag correctly depends on whether the casket is closed or open. The flag is not made for outside display due to its composition and size. Only one flag per veteran can be issued by the funeral home, but there are veterans’ and community groups that may provide assistance with getting a replacement flag.
