Violist Juliet White-Smith: The Goal Of The Arts Is To Grow As A Person
September 24, 2019 – – Dr. Juliet White-Smith, world-renowned musician and Ohio State University Viola Professor, recently opened up about her views on music and its contribution to communities around the world. Through a video, Dr. White-Smith explained how her skill with the viola, the music she makes through it, and the lessons she has given her students at The Ohio State University are all part of her contribution to the world.
Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, White-Smith has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, appearing as a soloist with the Thailand Philharmonic, Fort Collins Symphony, and Denver Philharmonic orchestras. She has performed in the viola sections of the Rochester Philharmonic, the Columbus (OH) Symphony, Grand Rapids (MI) Symphony, and the Houston Grand Opera orchestras. Her years of experience and many accomplishments have led White-Smith to her current status as one of the most sought after viola teachers in the world. She has presented masterclasses at music conservatories all over the United States and the world, including Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, the Eastman School of Music, and Mahidol University’s College of Music in Thailand.
Teaching since she was 25 years old, beginning at Western Michigan University, she joined Ohio State’s faculty in 2012 after 21 years at the University of Northern Colorado and continues to share her vision, passion and experience with young musicians.
White-Smith earned her Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the Eastman School of Music. In 2018 she joined the prestigious Artist-Faculty at the Brevard Music Festival, which hosts a vital, engaging, and unique viola component. In addition to this viola summer program, White-Smith was the featured pre-college viola clinician at the 2012 annual conference of the American String Teachers Association in Atlanta, Georgia. With the help of the Office of International Affairs at The Ohio State University, she spearheaded the OSU-Vietnam Cultural Outreach Project. She regularly appears as a conference presenter and has published multiple articles in a number of well-known pedagogical publications, including American String Teacher and Journal of the American Viola Society. She was a featured pedagogue in the “Ask the Teacher” forum of The Strad in the April 2010 issue.
This video is published on her Youtube channel. In the video, Dr. White-Smith advocates that In order to fully develop one’s musical abilities, one must learn to tap into their own natural creativity, harness it, and then actively put it to use. Each individual’s creativity and talent is constantly evolving and developing, and there is no limit to the feats one might be capable of if they choose to make full use of their innate ability and continue to expand it.
“My job is not to give you a ten-step plan to becoming a successful musician. That’s like going to the toy store and buying a paint-by-number art kit. ‘Follow these instructions to a ‘T” and I can guarantee your success!’ My goal is to assist you in finding your own unique path; to teach you in such a way that you will listen actively, both aurally and on a kinesthetic level; to insist that you become your own teacher; to ‘grow’ you to a point where you will feel that you can function, flourish, and fly with confidence to the next phase in your musical life,” said Dr. White-Smith.
The skills students acquire while in the OSU Viola Studio also help them develop their own natural ability to be a life-long self-learner through an increased level of self-awareness.
The Arts provide, according to Dr. Juliet White-Smith, for us to grow as humans—and her years of working with musicians both young and old from all across the globe have given her the skills and knowledge needed to grow humans through the arts.
