WebVine Confirm That Companies Are Not Fully Embracing Technology
Sydney based WebVine is a technology consultancy helping clients all around the globe with digital transformation projects. In a recent communique, they confirmed their observation that Australian Companies have the technology but are not using it anywhere near as fully as they could be.
Sydney, Australia – April 28, 2018 /PressCable/ —
In the third quarter of 2017, productivity in Australia decreased 1.3% on the previous quarter, a trend reflected across most of the G20. The Australian Treasury’s Economic Roundup warns that currently, increases in Australia’s productivity rely on increasing investment per worker, rather than our ability to use resources more efficiently. We need to work smarter to compete in a global economy.
Even in advanced economies, penetration of commercial technology can be slow or partial says a recent OECD report. According to one estimate, using innovative information and communication technologies in industry could boost productivity by 5% to 8%.
A McKinsey report on digital opportunity in Australia estimated the potential to grow the Australian economy between $140 and $250 billion over the next eight years, however Australia currently ranks 18th on the World Economic Forum’s Network Readiness Index, having lost two places from the previous year, indicating we may struggle to realise this potential.
“Business collaboration on innovation is generally low in Australia. Across a range of collaboration metrics, Australia typically sits in the bottom half of the OECD.” – Australian Innovation System Report 2017
We have IoT, AI, cloud computing and machine learning, we just aren’t leveraging them effectively and the classic problems of the knowledge worker remain – too many unprofitable demands on our time. The question is being asked, why aren’t we more productive.
Despite advances in technology with the potential to improve productivity and boost living standards, many companies and government agencies are failing to adopt these new tools and processes.
Marcus Dervin, Managing Director of Sydney technology consultancy WebVine believes productivity comes down to using the tools we already have. “The majority of medium to large organisations have access to innovative collaboration and communication technology, but lack a strategy to use them. We need to make these tools available to knowledge workers, or they will either find their own or businesses will simply become less and less competitive.”
It’s a global challenge, but WebVine are addressing it with uniquely Australian humour, highlighting the problems with how we work in a series of short video clipswith the theme ‘The problem with how we work,’ funded in partnership with Microsoft.
Written by and starring Tropfest winner and comedian Gary Eck, the videos share the trials of new employee Eric at a fictional company whose management and day-to-day processes are stuck in the 90s.
“I think a lot of people will relate to Eric. The videos will make you laugh, but they are meant to highlight problems, to get people talking about solutions” says Dervin. “You can start a conversation with your IT guys, with your senior team and begin that transformation process.” says Dervin.
With the threat of disruption from new competitors, the advance of Millennial workforce dominance as well as the recent proliferation of innovative workplace applications, Digital Transformation is a hot topic. Modern organisations must invest the effort in developing their strategy to leverage the tool available or be faced with the prospect of obsolescence.
