White Card Training Critical to New Australian Apprenticeship Support Network

Brisbane, Australia – July 8, 2015 /PressCable/

The Department of Education and Training in Australia, have created a new Apprenticeship Support Network to help encourage young people to join the construction industry and alleviate some of the effects of the trade shortage, in addition to a number of other initiatives that have been created to boost the number of apprenticeship completions.

Following reports of skills shortages in the country’s busiest constructions sectors, successful companies from around the country have been recruited to form part of the new Support Network, the South Australian Assistant Minister for Education and Training, Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham announced recently. The Apprenticeship Network will assist with recruitment, training and retention of apprentices and trainees in the construction sector, ultimately improving completion rates and helping evade the predicted construction skills shortage.

There has also been a decline in interest in pursuing construction trades from young people recently. Last year 10,000 fewer apprentices and trainees completed their training in NSW than one year ago – the situation is similar in most states and territories. While young people were sceptical about entering the industry, others would begin but not complete their apprenticeships. Companies have also been cautious about taking on new trainees however with construction booming nationwide and predicted to continue well into the near future, the need for new skilled labour is great.

The Senator announced on his website,

“We are building an apprenticeship system which responds to the needs of employers, the economy and supports apprentices,”

The Senator explained that improved apprenticeship completion rates would mean more Australians would benefit from training and go on to enjoy fulfilling careers.

One of the concerns of potential apprentices in the past has been safety. The construction industry has been one of the highest risk, which is why the federal government mandated general construction safety training (the White Card). Apprentices and trainees are particularly at risk of injury on the work site because of their inexperience, which is why training of these workers is crucial. Every employee must be in possession of a White Card before beginning their apprenticeship on a construction site.
