Wine Returns To 33rd Annual Festival In The Pines

The eagerly awaited event of the summer season in western Wisconsin returns, and this time, the serving of wine returns with it.

For the last 32 years, the final weekend in August has been one the members of Eau Claire and the surrounding communities look forward to with great anticipation. This year is no different as the annual Festival in the Pines returns to Carson Park. With more than 200 vendors selling handmade crafts and regional food, live entertainment and special events designed just for the children, it has become the signature event of the summer. This year there might be a slightly higher level of anticipation, however, as a familiar beverage makes its return to the festivities.

“For the first time in 10 years, Festival in the Pines will allow its guests to purchase wine at the Eau Claire City/County Tavern League Beer Garden,” festival organizers announced recently when introducing the new and returning activities for the fair. The absence began when regulations changed, prohibiting the consumption of wine in open areas. It was the popularity of a beer garden that helped bring wine back after going missing for a decade. “Since the City of Eau Claire required Festival organizers to fence in the beer garden last year, it was deemed an appropriate time to begin wine sales again, since the one requirement for serving wine is to have it in a fenced-in area.”

The beer garden is not going to be the only place the world of wine will have a presence at the Festival. One of the many vendors excited to be part of the Festival this year is a local company that specializes in handmade wine accessories and helps introduce people to the wine lifestyle.

“Having wine available for sale is going to be a huge boost for us,” said Jennifer Finnell, owner and President of Woodsy Wino, an online shopping experience. Unlike other online wine retailers, Finnell designed her company to have a full rich mythology, making the experience as entertaining as it is educational. “This is already the perfect environment to sell the accessories we are becoming known for, and now that connection will be made even stronger.

The centerpiece of the items they offer for sale are handmade wine glass charms designed for people to attach to their glasses. Described by many people as having jewelry like quality, they have also helped Finnell and her company receive supplemental patents for the stemless wine glass charms they have created. It is more than just the reintroduction of wine that has Finnell excited about being part of the Festival.

“We created a complete mystical story at Woodsy Wino, complete with Princess Merlot and the Chardonnay woods,” Finnell said. “Being here in the park, surrounded by woods and nature, it is almost like bringing some of that story to life.”

The Festival in the Pines happens Saturday August 29th from 9am until 6pm and Sunday the 30th from 9am until 4pm. Admission is just $6, with discounts for senior citizens and children under 12 are free. Shuttle buses will be available both days to help ease congestion.
