Woman From Texas Has Filed a Lawsuit Claiming Invokana Side Effects Resulted in Ketoacidosis
May 01, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on an Invokana lawsuit filed against the manufacturer of the drug Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson. The plaintiff, from Texas, claims that as a result of taking the drug for a period of less than one month, she developed ketoacidosis as well as damage to the kidneys which has been irreversible and therefore requires continuous treatment.
The lawsuit, filed in New Jersey, claims that her injuries were life-threatening and also a direct result of negligence on the part of Janssen Pharmaceuticals. She now seeks to recover over $10 million in damages.
Ketoacidosis occurs when an overwhelming amount of toxic acid (ketones) build up in the bloodstream. It can take a very short amount of time for the condition to occur and cause damage that could lead to a coma or death. Unfortunately, with those taking the drug, ketoacidosis may present without high blood sugar levels, which is normally a trademark symptom of the condition. When blood sugar levels are now elevated, it can be difficult to diagnose, and delay the treatment of the condition.
Because of the high number of reports alleging this link, the FDA has asked that any patients who are currently on this drug or similar SGLT2 inhibitors be on the lookout for any of the symptoms associated with ketoacidosis. This includes frequent urination, nausea and vomiting and excessive thirst as well as additional symptoms including fatigue and confusion.
“We are currently investigating several cases where individuals who took an SGLT2, such as Invokana, Farxiga or Jardiance, subsequently were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney complications, heart attack and stroke. If we prove that these complications were caused by the drug, we look forward to aggressively pursuing the rights of our clients and recovering just compensation for their pain and suffering, and for what their families may have had to endure,” stated attorney Laurence Banville, a defective drug and product lawyer and sponsor of TheProductLawyers.com.
