Worker Critically Injured In Hartford, Safety Questioned By Construction Accident Lawyer
June 10, 2016 – – Thomas Moverman of LipsigLawyers.com questioned the current safety precautions and regulations that the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) require contractors and sub-contractors to adhere to. He urges OSHA to consider making revisions to the current rules and regulations for the construction industry. He also wishes the Hartford victim a quick and pain-free recovery and hopes that the victim will eventually feel comfortable returning to work.
According to a report from CBS Connecticut, a construction worker was seriously injured in an accident at Hartford Hospital’s new Bone and Joint Institute on June 2nd. Police indicate that the worker fell 3 stories after pieces of scaffolding collapsed. The victim is currently being treated in the hospital’s emergency department. The report also indicates that Hartford Hospital, the construction contractor, and OSHA are investigating the cause of the accident. A hospital spokesperson said “Safety is of utmost importance and one of our core values,” emphasizing the hospital’s desire to support the victim.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicates that there are nearly 60 fatalities and over 4,500 injuries per year occur as a result of scaffolding deficiencies. Construction worker-fatalities accounted for approximately 19 percent of the total of work-related deaths in 2014, numbering nearly 900 fatalities. The BLS emphasizes that the number of fatal injuries has predominantly decreased since 1992, however, the total in 2014 was the highest number of fatal injuries since 2008. OSHA indicates that are nearly 2.3 million construction workers in the United States at any given time.
