Los Angeles, CA, United States – November 24, 2016 /PressCable/ —

HOLLYWOOD, CA – Ron Collins of Oro Valley, Arizona, who is one of the few writers to have been honored twice at the Annual L. Ron Hubbard Achievement awards, once as a published finalist and once as a winner, has released Starflight, the first volume in his new space-based science fiction series titled Stealing the Sun.

Since his win in the contest, Ron has continued to write and publish science fiction short stories, novelettes, novellas and novels, creating an impressive bibliography. In late 2014, he released Saga of the God-Touched Mage, a series of 8 novellas, each of which found its way into the top 10 of Amazon’s Dark Fantasy lists and the first of which hit #1 in the UK and #2 in the US.

Ron’s winning short story in the Writers of the Future international contest in 1999, “Out of the Blue,” was published in L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume XV. “The Disappearance of Josie Andrew,” was a published finalist in 1998’s L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume XIV.

The short story that launched this latest series also carried the title “Stealing the Sun,” and was first created at the Writers of the Future Workshop before subsequently seeing publication in Analog. It was later included in that year’s preliminary ballot for the Nebula Award, and Locus Magazine’s Recommended Reading list.

The five-book series follows a cast of characters across the expanse of intergalactic space as they deal with war, politics, first contact, and what it means to be both human and free. Torrance Black is a low-level officer in the Solar System’s Intergalactic Command who finds himself alone in his quest to investigate the possibility of intelligent life. Casmir Francis is the leader of a radical organization who just wants the universe to be free of what he sees as oppressive oversight. And then there are other forces in the universe who see things in a different way altogether.

“Each of the five stories carries a different set of ideas,” Collins said when asked about why he wrote them. “I think science fiction is the most human of literatures because every story is, at its root, about what it means to be human. Each of these five books mean something different to me, and if I’ve done my job well enough, then the five pieces together will hold their own truth, too. As I wrote them I was thinking about who we are as human beings, what it means when we clash, and maybe even what life might mean. What does it mean to be part of the universe?”

Following the 1982 release of his internationally acclaimed bestselling science fiction novel, Battlefield Earth, written in celebration of 50 years as a professional writer, L. Ron Hubbard created The Writers of the Future writing contest in 1983 to provide a means for aspiring writers of speculative fiction to get that much-needed break. Due to the success of the Writing Contest, the companion Illustrators of the Future Contest was created in 1988.

The intensive mentoring process has proven very successful. The 380 past winners of the Writing Contest have published 838 novels and nearly 4,000 short stories. They have produced 27 New York Times bestsellers and their works have sold over 50 million copies.

The 310 past winners of the Illustrating Contest have produced over 4,500 illustrations, 356 comic books, graced 594 books and albums with their art and visually contributed to 36 TV shows and 46 major movies.

The Writers of the Future Award is the genre’s most prestigious award of its kind and has now become the largest, most successful and demonstrably most influential vehicle for budding creative talent in the world of speculative fiction. Since inception, the Writers and Illustrators of the Future contests have produced 32 anthology volumes and awarded nearly $1 Million cumulatively in cash prizes and royalties.
