Xarelto Lawsuit From Ohio Claims Drug Caused Gastrointestinal Bleeding

October 30, 2015 – – BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on another Xarelto Lawsuit filed, this time by a woman from Ohio who claims that blood thinner Xarelto caused her to develop gastrointestinal bleeding. The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.

The plaintiff claims that she was prescribed the blood thinner in September of 2013 to treat her atrial fibrillation, which is a very common heart rhythm condition in many individuals that can cause strokes. Within just 2 months of using the drug, however, she developed severe gastrointestinal bleeding.

A gastrointestinal bleed is any form of blood loss that occurs in the gastrointestinal tract, which spans from the mouth to the rectum area. For those taking blood thinners, this situation is especially dangerous as the blood is often unable to clot and stop. These patients are at risk of bleeding out.

Xarelto is considered an especially dangerous blood thinner in this aspect, as it has no antidote. When patients taking older blood thinners experience bleeding episodes, for example, their doctor is able to administer a vitamin K treatment, as vitamin K counteracts the effects of these blood thinners and allows the blood to clot, preventing the patient from losing too much blood. Xarelto, however, does not respond to vitamin K, and requires life-saving measures for anyone who is bleeding uncontrollably, such as blood transfusions.

The many lawsuits concerning Xarelto were filed against manufacturers Bayer and Johnson & Johnson. They have been consolidated to form multidistrict litigation in the Eastern District of Louisiana, and are being overseen by U.S. District Judge Eldon Fallon.

As of now, the Judge has scheduled a series of 4 bellwether trials to head to court in early 2017. Recent data shows the lawsuit numbers continuing to substantially grow. According to data from the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, recent numbers are over 1,700. The lawsuits similarly allege that the drug has caused people across the U.S. severe and deadly bleeding complications.

Attorney Marc Goldich is currently working to assist other individuals who have suffered adverse effects after using Xarelto to explore their legal options. He offers free and confidential consultations for anyone involved. Those who have suffered due to using Xarelto may be entitled to compensation.
