Xarelto Lawsuit Numbers Have Surpassed 2,000 Cases Total

November 20, 2015 – – BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on Xarelto lawsuits filed, which now total more than 2,000 cases nationally. These cases are comprised of over 1,700 federal filings, which have been consolidated to form multidistrict litigation number 2592, as well as around 500 cases in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s mass tort group. Lawsuits across the board similarly allege that blood-thinner Xarelto causes uncontrollable bleeding episodes, which have sometimes resulted in death.

Many of the allegations surrounding the dangers of Xarelto specifically cite the fact that the drug has no corresponding antidote. If a patient that is taking Xarelto becomes injured and bleeds, physicians will be unable to counter Xarelto’s effects and clot the patient’s blood. In these circumstances, doctors must resort to life-saving measures such as blood transfusions in an attempt to keep the patient alive. Losing too much blood is incredibly dangerous and can result in death. Traditional blood thinners do not pose the same danger. They respond to vitamin K treatments, so that if someone taking a traditional blood thinner becomes injured and bleeds, doctors administer vitamin K to reverse the medicine’s effects and clot their blood more easily.

Many of the Xarelto lawsuits filed are against manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary company of pharmaceutical conglomerate Johnson & Johnson. Generally, the medication is given to patients who are at increased risk of blood clots and stroke due to atrial fibrillation, or those who may be recovering from hip and knee replacement surgeries.

Several studies have additionally supported plaintiff’s arguments in these cases. A 2014 study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association found that rivaroxaban [Xarelto] was, in fact, connected to “severe, symptomatic liver injury.” Additionally, a British Medical Journal stated that their seemed to be a “twofold higher risk of bleeding with rivaroxaban [Xarelto] as compared with warfarin.” Many plaintiffs noted that, had they been made aware of these dangers and of safer alternatives on the market, they would have never used Xarelto.

As lawsuits concerning the drug surpass 2,000 both federally and through Pennsylvania’s mass tort action, those involved suspect that this is just the beginning. Additional lawsuits are expected to be filed. As they are, Attorney Marc Goldich is working to ensure that anyone who used Xarelto and subsequently experienced adverse side effects has the opportunity to explore their legal rights. These individuals may be entitled to compensation, and are being offered free legal consultations by Attorney Goldich.
