Xarelto Lawsuit Numbers Reach Record Levels
April 12, 2017 – – A spokesperson for a consumer information site regarding Xarelto lawsuits states that the number of cases filed against the drug’s manufacturer have reached record highs. More than 11,000 lawsuits in total have been filed against Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of Xarelto, an anticoagulant that was initially marketed as a replacement for warfarin.
“Warfarin had been causing internal bleeding and needed a replacement,” says the representative for www.xarelto-lawsuits.org. “Xarelto was marketed as a replacement for this drug and deemed, incorrectly, to be safe for patients.”
Xarelto was initially marketed as a replacement for warfarin in patients who were at an elevated risk for developing thrombosis and embolism due to blood clots. When studies showed that warfarin caused bleeding in these patients, many physicians automatically began prescribing Xarelto as a replacement. However, Xarelto began causing severe side effects as well. Since its approval in 2011 by the FDA, Xarelto actually caused more side effects than warfarin in patients who had used the latter for many years.
“About 160 cases were reported,” says the Xarelto-lawsuits.org representative. “160 cases plus an additional 360 that were reported by the FDA in 2012 alone.”
Lawsuits involving the drug claim that the medication caused internal bleeding and state that this bleeding cannot be controlled. An antidote was designed to stop the bleeding caused by warfarin but there has not yet been an effective antidote that will stop the bleeding caused by Xarelto. Claims heading into court state that Johnson & Johnson misinformed physicians and consumers by not warning them of these serious risks and that the company should have waited to release the medication until all studies were done and an antidote was created.
There are even more claims being filed on a regular basis against the pharmaceutical company, who is facing lawsuits for a number of product liability claims for additional medications as well as various other products. Many of those claims are coming from all over the United States with a few being filed in Canada as well. Xarelto-lawsuits.org offers more information about these lawsuits as well as resources for those who feel they have a valid claim to file.
