Xarelto Lawsuit Plaintiff Alleges That Anticoagulant Caused Life-Threatening Internal Bleed
April 27, 2016 – – BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on the details of a lawsuit which has been filed against Xarelto manufacturers Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a division of Johnson & Johnson corporation) and Bayer Healthcare. The complaint was initially filed in the Eastern District of New York under case number 1:14-cv-04524. It was filed by a plaintiff from Texas who claims that new-generation blood thinner Xarelto’s manufacturers neglected to inform consumers and medical professionals of the dangerous side effects which she now links to use of their drug.
Further lawsuit details indicate that the plaintiff was prescribed Xarelto by her doctor to prevent the risk of stroke which is commonly associated with her atrial fibrillation condition. The plaintiff reports that she had taken Xarelto for only 5 months before she suddenly suffered from a life-threatening internal bleed. She says the bleed has left her with long-term medical needs, and therefore continued medical bills.
Just five years ago in 2011, Xarelto gained approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The drug was intended to treat patients who were recovering from hip and knee replacement surgeries as well as those who were suffering from pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. The drug’s approved uses were later expanded to include treatment for those with atrial fibrillation. Since the initial approval, the anticoagulant has also been given two “black box” warnings from the FDA. These are the most strict warnings a product can be given before being removed from the market and from public sale.
Today, Xarelto lawsuits are mounting and reportedly number over 3,400. The plaintiffs involved in the filings share similar allegations that the drug places users at increased risk for the development of dangerous and sudden bleeding episodes. More than 2,800 federally-filed Xarelto lawsuit cases have been consolidated and transferred to a single court in Eastern Louisiana by the JPML, forming MDL 2592. Additionally, over 620 Xarelto lawsuits have been formed into a mass tort program in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by the Court of Common Pleas.
As the plaintiffs involved anxiously await trial dates, Attorney Joseph Osborne is working to help other patients who have used Xarelto and who believe that the drug has negatively impacted their health.
