Xarelto Lawsuit Plaintiff Claims Drug Dosage Is Ineffective

May 29, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on the daily dosage requirements of Xarelto, as compared to other blood-thinning drugs, and a new lawsuit that disputes claims by the manufacturers of the drug that the recommended dosage is adequate for the medication to work. Most blood-thinning drugs that preceded Xarelto required the patient to take 2 pills a day in order to ensure the body was sufficiently medicated for a time period of 24 hours. Xarelto’s dosage is only one pill per day, unlike any other blood thinner currently on the market.

A new lawsuit, filed October 8, 2015, against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a division of the Johnson and Johnson Corporation, and Bayer AG, directly calls into question the effectiveness of only taking Xarelto once a day. While many lawsuits up to this point focused on the increased risk of excessive bleeding caused by Xarelto, this is the first lawsuit that directly refutes the daily dosage requirement, and raise serious concerns over the “one-size-fits-all” mentality regardless of weight or size of the patient.

The plaintiff in this particular case claims in his court filing that the once daily dosage is ineffective, in that he states he suffered a stroke only four days after starting his treatment with Xarelto. He was purposely using Xarelto to prevent strokes, which he was deemed susceptible to having due to his atrial fibrillation. The plaintiff is claiming that not only did it not prevent his stroke, he believes that it may, in fact, have actually precipitated it.

Xarelto was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011 to treat a number of conditions as well as patients recovering from some surgical procedures. Since the FDA’s approval, it has issued two black box warnings directly calling into question the future market availability of the drug. It has also been the subject of thousands of consolidated lawsuits in Philadelphia, PA (550 cases), as well as in Eastern Louisiana (in excess of 2,800 cases).
