The use of facial acupuncture for cosmetic purposes is gaining popularity all over the world. In the article, Yin’s Acupuncture & Herbs Clinic shared basic things that a potential patient has to know when considering acupuncture as treatment.
Facial acupuncture is used to improve skin problems on the face. However, though the procedure is mainly focused on stimulating collagen production for facial enhancement, it might involve the stimulation of other body parts as well. On the average, 40 needles are inserted on the face and about 12 points in other body parts.
During the procedure, the acupuncturist will insert needles into the skin. The punctures will create micro-wounds that will trigger the natural healing mechanism of the body to start working. The lymphatic and circulatory systems are also stimulated and will respond by sending nutrients and oxygen to the affected skin cells.
Natural collagen production is also stimulated because of the trauma received by the skin. Since there is a need to heal tissues, there is also a need to supply protein, and the specific protein for that is collagen.
When done right, acupuncture can contribute to elimination or reduction of scar size, decreased facial skin sagging, improved skin texture, minimization of wrinkles, and reduced facial edema. It can also help with acne-prone skin by improving the detoxification process of the skin and the skin’s immunity against bacteria
The procedure requires health evaluation by physical observation including feeling the pulse, smell, tongue reading and medical history review. A constitutional differentiation diagnosis is also required, after which the selection of acupoints will be performed. In terms of acupoints, the needles can be placed on body surfaces except orifice areas.
Prior to the procedure, the needles will be sterilized. Insertion of needles into the skin (up to 0.25 mm deep) will then commence. Afterward, the needles will be withdrawn.
This procedure comes with certain risks. Bleeding, soreness or bruising may occur at the sites of insertion. In rare cases, the needle might be inserted too deep resulting to internal organ damage. Infection may occur because of the use of unsterilized needles.
The World Health Organization Guidelines on Basic Training and Safety in Acupuncture states that it is not easy to stipulate absolute contraindications for acupuncture. However, for safety reasons, the guidelines suggest that this therapy should be avoided in medical and surgical emergencies, malignant tumors, pregnancy and bleeding disorders. In addition, pregnant women should avoid acupuncture, and so should patients with uncontrolled movements and those with diabetes, cancer, or hemophilia or other blood clotting disorders.
