Youth Boat Brings the King Nemo Back to its Former Glory
Group Launches Campaign to Fund Renovations
LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / April 28, 2016 / Youth Boat, a Sydney, Australia-based group asks boating enthusiasts to imagine sailing the seas on a boat with a great history. That boat is the King Nemo, a wooden vessel that was previously used to help at-risk youths to get back into school and to increase their interest in education.
A Coffs Harbour resident named Harry built the King Nemo in 1954, and named the wooden boat for his daughter, Pamela. The King Nemo is in dire need of a bit of “tender lovin’ care,” and that’s what Youth Boat and Kathy Reid are interested in providing.
The King Nemo is an all wooden boat that is currently in dry dock. Although there is a strong hull in place, the red paint on the body needs replacing as well as other necessary aesthetic upgrades.
While the King Nemo has been coated with antifoul to prevent barnacles and marine organisms from attaching to its bottom, and $5,000 has been put into restorations, this ship still needs a full renovation to achieve its goal of helping disengaged youths to return to school and to learn about boating.
It’s not just for kids though. Once the vessel is seaworthy once again, there will be opportunities for groups to take the boat out for day trips – the Sydney Harbour is a beautiful destination for a day on the water.
“This is a great vessel to have out on the water, especially when you’re out with a group of friends and having a good time,” Reid said.
The little red boat has a history as the King Nemo, but with the work to improve the vessel comes the need for a new name that represents its second chance. In honor of its relaunch, Reid is planning to hold a “renaming day” to christen the refurbished vessel, and the public can play an important role in shaping its future.
Reid and Youth Boat have also created a campaign on Indiegogo where they are offering several levels of perks for donors. It’s going to take approximately $17,500 to get the King Nemo back in the water, but once that happens, individuals who have donated time or funding to get her floating again will get exclusive access.
