Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiff Alleges Diabetes Drug Caused Development Of Kidney Failure

March 18, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on plaintiff allegations that new-generation, type-2 diabetes drug Invokana can cause increased risk for the development of kidney damage and kidney failure for patients using it. Within Invokana’s first year on the market alone, it was reported that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received 50 reports of adverse events indicating the development of renal impairment and kidney failure among patients.

In March of 2013, Invokana was approved by the FDA. It was intended to help patients with type-2 diabetes to maintain their blood sugar (glucose) levels, and works by preventing the kidneys from reabsorbing excess sugar and instead using the organs to remove that excess sugar from the body through urination. Because it depends so heavily on the kidneys to work this way, the drug can understandably put stress on them.

Just before the new year, in December 2015, the FDA released a public safety communication stating that they were requiring Invokana manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a division of Johnson & Johnson) to make changes to the product’s warning label to better reflect some new concerns.

The FDA also indicated that they received 19 adverse event reports discussing patients who had developed life-threatening health complications that began as urinary tract infections (UTIs) and later, as the bacteria spread, turned into blood and kidney infections. Each of the 19 patients detailed within these adverse event reports required hospitalization and dialysis, (a kidney failure treatment). Damage done to the kidneys is especially dangerous as it is unable to be reversed or repaired. Severely damaged kidneys require full kidney transplants, which patients are not always lucky enough to receive.
