As IVC Filter Lawsuit Filings Mount, Study Shows Some IVC Filters Tilt More Than Others
July 01, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a recent study indicating that certain IVC filters have been shown to tilt more than others. The study interview done with Eric T. Aaltonen MD, MPH, indicated, “Option filters have an increased rate of tilt at retrieval and increased retrieval time compared to Denali filters. No significant difference in tilt or retrieval time was found with ALN filters. Additionally, the presence of tilt correlates with more equipment use and increased fluoroscopy time during retrieval.”
IVC filters were designed to catch blood clots before they reach the lungs. Medical research, however, has long associated the use of IVC filters with the risk of potentially life-threatening issues. Complications such as filter migration, filter fracture, embolization, and perforation have all been cited in adverse event reports, according to the FDA.
Because of these alleged side effects, hundreds of patients have filed lawsuits against manufacturers such as C.R. Bard and Cook Medical. Plaintiffs have claimed that not only were they suffering from health issues because of the devices, but they were also not adequately warned by the companies about the risks. They allege that these devices were marketed despite the fact that the companies were aware of the defects. These cases have been combined in MDLs in Arizona and Indiana and are in the process of developing bellwether cases.
