Hazards of IVC Filters Exposed By NBC Report, As IVC Filter Lawsuit Plaintiffs Deeply Concerned By Risks
July 01, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on an NBC story related to implantation of GC Series IVC filters manufactured by C.R. Bard. NBC is reporting information that Bard had some concerns over potential issues with the filters as little as four months after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave its approval. Even though there were some concerns, the filters remained on the market. Reported issues with the filters centered around the number failures of the devices and complications that resulted from their use.
NBC completed a subsequent news story to that which originally aired on December 31, 2015, that focused on the reasons why the filters were allowed to remain on the market despite the problems patients encountered. NBC stated that the information they were privy to was culled from confidential records as well as a memo and study that was done on the devices.
The filters are used in patients who are considered at an increased risk of developing blood clots. The filters capture clots and hold them until they naturally dissipate, thus preventing them from reaching the lungs and heart. The filters are placed in the inferior vena cava vein and are only meant to be used temporarily and then removed after the risk of blood clots have subsided.
Another aspect of the filters that has increasingly alarmed many is the number of lawsuits that have been filed in America and Canada against the manufacturers of the devices. Plaintiffs in these cases have maintained in their court documents that the medical devices are designed defectively and are potentially dangerous if used since there is a risk that the devices will break apart at their original implantation points. The pieces can then travel to other parts of the body which could present life-threatening circumstances for the patient.
