IVC Filter Specialist Emphasizes Distrust Of IVC Filter Manufacturer as IVC Filter Lawsuit Cases Increase Across North America
July 02, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a statement made by an IVC filter specialist regarding the device’s safety. In an NBC News report, Dr. William Kuo was interviewed about recent issues and complications related to the medical device. He stated that given the number of complications that have arisen and the frequency that the device has failed, made it quite obvious they were never safe to be implanted in the first place. Dr. Quo also used the interview as an opportunity to state that the manufacturers were not able to be trusted to act in the best interests of the patients who have had the filters implanted.
IVC filters are used in patients who are at an elevated risk of developing blood clots. The device captures clots and holds them until they dissipate naturally, thus keeping them away from the heart and lungs. The filters are implanted in the patient’s inferior vena cava vein and are only meant to be used temporarily and then removed when the threat of blood clots has passed.
NBC News has done a couple of stories specifically related to the safety of IVC filters and has also questioned why C.R. Bard, one of the manufacturers of the devices, was allowed to continue to market its filters in light of device complications that quickly emerged shortly after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the device. NBC had based its reporting on confidential records in its possession, as well as a study and a related memo about the devices.
NBC News reported on the increasing number of lawsuits being filed in the US and Canada against various manufacturers of IVC filters alleging the devices have been defectively designed and manufactured. The filters have been reported to fracture with the pieces migrating to other parts of the body creating the potential for serious health complications.
