California Man Files E-Cig Explosion Lawsuit, After Numerous E-Cigarette Explosions Wound Consumers
July 02, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on two instances of e-cigarettes exploding in California causing second and third-degree burns to the users. E-cigarette batteries usually use lithium-ion batteries and when the module overheats the device can combust causing pieces of the e-cigarette to eject from the device sometimes causing serious burns or igniting fires. The ejecting pieces have the potential to also cause significant bodily harm.
There have been a number of cases of exploding e-cigarettes reported in the United States as well as in the UK.
One such case occurred in Los Angeles where an e-cigarette exploded in a man’s pocket. He is now suing the manufacturer and the seller of the e-cigarette that he used. The man claims that he suffered second and third-degree burns on parts of his body. As reported by CBS Los Angeles, the man allegedly was in a friend’s room at a hotel he was staying at when he began to feel a burning on his leg. He reported that once he realized it was the battery of the e-cigarette that was burning he managed to get the device out of his pocket and onto the floor. At that time the device was sparking and left burn marks on the carpet.
A second example of an exploding e-cigarette occurred in February. NBC reported that a 26-year old California man from Orange County suffered second and third-degree burns when his e-cigarette caught fire in his pocket. After spending 11 days in the hospital, he must now deal with a damaged leg which could take up to two years to heal, as per doctors that treated him and as per the media report.
