UK Barmaid Escapes Serious Injury During E-Cigarette Explosion, Induces Potential E-Cig Lawsuit Cases

July 03, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on an e-cigarette explosion that caused severe head injuries to a 22-year old Oklahoma man. He was rushed to the emergency room and required 8 stitches. Luckily, no other damage resulted from the burning piece of e-cig that could have ignited the carpet in his residence, causing more serious and severe consequences.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has stated that between 2009 and 2014 there have been at least 25 incidences of exploding e-cigarettes, yet this number could be far greater when accounting for the number of unreported explosions. The agency also has stated that the rate of explosions has increased in proportion to the rise in popularity of e-cigs.

FEMA has concluded that the cause of most e-cig explosions is the lithium-ion batteries. The batteries are not manufactured under stringent regulations, especially those of lesser known name and quality. Explosions can occur when the internal pressure rises too high in the device. This occurs, according to FEMA, most frequently when the devices are charging. The internal pressure needs to be released and can do so in the form of an explosion.

Explosions are not only happening in the United States. There have been instances in the U.K. as well. According to BBC.com, a barmaid, while working at a pub in Yorkshire, located in northern England, was hit by an e-cig that exploded behind the bar while charging. She stated she was surprised that it happened. Thankfully, she did not suffer any serious damage to her body.

Firefighters that responded to an incident at the Bucks Inn Hotel stated that the lesser-known types of e-cigs were a potential fire hazard.
