Judge In Talcum Powder Lawsuit Sets ‘Organizational Conference’ For Next Month

November 07, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a recent action by one of the presiding MDL judges in talcum powder cases.

According to HarrisMartin Publishing, the presiding judge in the federal MDL for Johnson & Johnson talcum powder claims has set an in-person organizational conference for November “to address the various motions and other ‘housekeeping’ issues in the individual cases.”

As these cases continue to progress, many women in the U.S. have made claims alleging that Johnson & Johnson hid valuable medical information that prevented consumers from knowing the dangers of using the powders. Those plaintiffs further claim that the use of Johnson & Johnson’s powders as a feminine hygiene product are directly linked to ovarian cancer. Johnson & Johnson has denied claims that their products cause cancer and has stated that no causal link exists.

The first talcum powder lawsuit was filed in 2009 by a woman from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2006 when she was 49 years old, according to an article by Huffington Post. She had allegedly used Johnson & Johnson powder for feminine hygiene purposes for many years. The plaintiff filed the complaint claiming Johnson & Johnson should be held accountable for gross negligence and fraud. Though a jury confirmed the association between cancer and talcum powder, the plaintiff was offered no compensatory damages.

Over the last 45 years, numerous studies have found that women who use baby powder as a feminine hygiene product are more likely to develop this debilitating disease. The product was widely popularized as a feminine hygiene product that women would often use to sprinkle the lining of their underwear.
