Common Hope Receives 4-Star Rating From Charity Navigator

February 06, 2017 – – Non-profit Common Hope, occupying an office space at Energy Park Drive office/warehouse building, has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, a charity watchdog that measures for financial health as well as organizational transparency and accountability. Only 3% of charities rated by Charity Navigator receive this designation.

Common Hope promotes hope and opportunity in Guatemala, partnering with children, families and communities who want to participate in a process of development to improve their lives though education, health care, and housing.

“At Common Hope we believe that education is the key to unwinding the cycle of poverty, so we provide the necessary resources for thousands of impoverished children to attend school each year. We understand, however, that education is about more than books and uniforms – a child’s success in school depends on the quality of the education he or she receives,” says office administrator Jess Grams.

Established in 1986, Common Hope was created from a desire to help the poor. Founders Dave and Betty Huebsch left their family, friends, and a peaceful lifestyle in Minnesota to see what they could offer the people of Guatemala. Their attention became focused on the remote village of Santiago Atitlán, where 40,000 people lived in stark poverty. When they asked parents in the village how they could best be helped, parents expressed a great yearning to educate their children so they might have a path to a better future.

In 1990, during Guatemala’s civil war, Common Hope was relocated to the Antigua valley, where it was safer to work yet the need was still great. Common Hope expanded its programs in the 1990s to include health care, housing, and social work support for students and their families. In 2005, they opened New Hope School, built and run by Common Hope, where student promotion rates and standardized test scores have consistently outperformed national averages. Today, Common Hope serves more than 11,000 impoverished children and adults in 26 communities outside of Antigua and Guatemala City.

Common Hope saw renovations in their offices at Energy Park Plaza in September 2013. This expansion allowed Common Hope to expand their staff and fundraising capacity, allowing them to serve more children and families in Guatemala.

Common Hope is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation and is audited annually. Contributions are 100% tax-deductible as allowed by law. Listed below site vistors will find eight years of financial and program outcomes for Common Hope.
