The Announcement
Intel expects to increase its presence in the high-end desktop markets and believes that customers are free to pay premiums in exchange for higher performance. Intel has built the Skylake-X processor to work seamlessly at high core counts, with minimal charge generation where the chips run at higher frequencies when fewer cores are loaded.
The Company is also launching the new x299 chipset, which is set to add I/O and overclocking capabilities. Intel also announced the updates to Intel Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0, which will now help identify the two top cores and direct critical workloads to those cores for a big jump on single or multithreaded performance.
Intel Portfolio
Prior to this announcement, Intel’s high-end desktop processors, also known as Broadwell-E was available with six, eight and 10 core options. The Intel Core X-series processor family delivers a series of extreme performance. The goal of the Company is to deliver the best performance and the X-series processor family will enable the Company to develop it as the most scalable, accessible and powerful desktop platform to date.
The family includes the Company’s first teraflop desktop CPUs and the Company is also introducing the completely new Intel Core i9 processor, representing the highest performance for advanced gaming, VR and content creation. According to the Company, at the top of the lineup, the Intel Core i9 Extreme Edition processor is really robust and is the first consumer desktop with 18 cores and 36 threads.
Feature Breakdown (X-series Processor Family)
1. Up to 10% faster multithread performance than the previous generation.
2. Massive 36-thread performance and quad-channel memory for content creation and extreme mega-tasking.
3. Intel Core i9 Extreme Edition processor features 18 cores and 36 threads.
4. Fully unlocked for performance tuning.
5. Rebalanced smart cache hierarchy.
Coupled with extra cores, the technology works to deliver extreme performance across the entire platform. Under this family of processors, the possibilities and expansion with this type of performance are endless. While content creators can have robust image rendering, video encoding, audio production and real-time preview, all running seamlessly in parallel to maximize efficiency. Additionally, gamers can play their favorite game, and also have the feasibility to stream, record and encode their gameplay and share it on social media, all while surrounded by multiple screens for a 12K experience with up to 4 discrete graphic cards.
Company Growth Prospects
Intel is the leading tech giant which offers multiple products and technology services to clients across the world. In July 2016, the Company announced a strategic collaboration with BMW Group and Mobileye to join forces and make self-driving vehicles a reality and agreed to bring solutions for highly and fully automated driving into series production by the end of 2021.
