Despite Fears, Increased TANAPA Fees Have Yet to Depress Tanzania Safari Tourism
Local observers have seen tourism business rise since July 1 introduction of higher national park concession fees, with operators so far absorbing hikes themselves, AlienAdv reports
DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania – July 25, 2017 /MarketersMedia/ —
On May 5, the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) announced plans to hike some safari lodge concession fees to $50 per person each night, spurring widespread fears that the tourism industry would suffer. Instead, Alien Adventure Pte Ltd (AlienAdv) observers have found that business levels for local tour operators have actually climbed since the increase went into effect on July 1.
With some safari operators guarding against lost business by absorbing the recent TANAPA fee increases themselves, many travelers have yet to personally feel the impact. At the same time, AlienAdv experts note that the long-term continuation of such policies cannot be guaranteed, leaving open the possibility that Tanzania Safari Prices will rise to account for the inflated concession fees in the future.
“Like so many others who love Tanzania, we have been closely following the news regarding TANAPA’s concession fee increases,” said AlienAdv co-founder Kshaunish Jaini. “Many in the tourism industry understandably feared the worst, and there’s no doubt that these increased fees are having an impact. So far, however, it has mostly been local safari operators who have been bearing the brunt of the fee hikes as a way of keeping their lodges full. On the other hand, it remains an open question whether and how long this can continue.”
As an amendment to the regulations pursuant to National Park Act, Tanzania’s Government Notice 194 included a new schedule of lodging concession fee rates for each of its 16 national parks. Ranging from 20 United States dollars per person per night for public campsites in Kitulo National Park to $50 for lodges and permanent tents in Serengeti National Park, news of the increased fees provoked protests from many safari operators and other tourism industry businesses.
With the new fees having gone into effect on July 1, however, AlienAdv travel specialists report that tourist arrivals have actually increased noticeably since. As safari and tour prices are still being held down by the willingness of some local operators to absorb the new fees themselves, however, it remains to be seen how long this will last.
