Florida Personal Injury Attorneys Applaud Apple and Google Efforts to Make Driving Safer
With the introduction of Apple’s iOS 11 and Google’s Pixel 2, the roads could become much safer.
Melbourne, United States – November 8, 2017 /MarketersMedia/ —
Since mobile phones first started to become popular, proponents on both sides have argued over how they affect public safety. Despite protests by mobile providers and cell phone users, every state, district and territory of the United States, with the exception of Montana, now has some laws limiting the use of cell phones while driving.
Taking a proactive approach to their customers’ safety, both Apple and Google have added a new feature to their latest operating systems, a “Do Not Disturb, I’m Driving” application. While both are designed to help reduce distracted driving accidents and out of necessity share some similarities, there are some differences.
Neither company’s offering is automatically active coming out of the box. However, Apple’s version gives an on-screen prompt the first time it detects a car’s motion or Bluetooth signal. With the Pixel version, it is a simple matter to turn it on in through the phone’s settings.
Once activated, both will automatically change to driving mode each time they detect a car’s motion or Bluetooth signal. They both also detect if a vehicle is equipped with hands-free devices and allow you the use of the car’s controls.
When in Do Not Disturb mode, both apps silence the phone and leave the screen darkened, but they both permit customized settings allowing messages from a priority list. As an added feature, the iOS 11 app sends a text to incoming callers, letting them know that you are driving and that in emergencies, texting the word “urgent” will break through the Do Not Disturb settings and send the phone’s user a notification of the missed call.
Of course, those simply riding in a vehicle would probably not want to have their phones silenced. Both of these operating systems allow the app to be disabled with just a few taps of the screen. For Google’s Pixel 2, this involves opening the control panel and manually disabling the application. Apple’s iOS 11 makes things a little simpler. When in driving mode, there is a persistent popup that will appear on the screen when someone tries to activate the phone. Tapping this banner will immediately return the phone to normal operations.
Teenagers make up a large portion of those involved in distracted driving incidents. For their safety and their parents’ peace of mind, Apple’s iOS 11 application also allows for the feature to be password locked under the “Application Restrictions” section of the control panel. This prevents teens from disabling the driving mode without parental consent.
The average text message takes 7 seconds to compose and send. A car traveling at legal highway speed will travel the length of a football field in only 5 seconds. It takes approximately 3 seconds to recognize an incoming call and determine the caller’s identity. That is enough time to travel almost 50 yards. By blocking these unnecessary distractions, Apple and Google have shown great concern for their customers’ safety and that of the public at large.
When queried on the introduction of these new features for cell phones, Melbourne, FL, personal injury lawyer Brad Sinclair had this to say, “I believe distracted driving has been causing accidents since the first man climbed on a horse’s back. In the early years of my practice, most of the distracted driving cases involved people eating, adjusting their radios or engaging in similar activities. All that changed with the advent of the cell phone boom. What had been a sad issue suddenly became pandemic in scope. I personally know that many of my fellow attorneys applaud these two pioneering companies for helping protect us from ourselves.”
