Historian Says Trump is a Rock Star One year out – How does President Donald J. Trump compare to his predecessors

Haymarket, United States – November 8, 2017 /NewsNetwork/

One year out – How does President Donald J. Trump compare to his predecessors? It depends on who is asking. And it depends on a persons metrics.

Doug Wead, who served as an adviser to two American presidents and wrote a book with one, has been writing about all the presidents for more than 30 years. Wead says that if the president’s performance is based on promises kept, “Donald Trump is a rock star!”

Wead says that “Most presidents campaign one way and govern another. Trump has increased jobs, reduced illegal immigration, cut regulations, turned around the Supreme Court and driven ISIS out of its major cities. And he’s made it all look easy.”

Doug Wead is the author of Game of Thorns, a book about the 2016 election, described by the Washington Book Review as “The best book on the 2016 presidential elections and likely to remain so in the future.”

And what will academia say?

Wead expects most presidential historians to be critics of Trump’s first year. “Historians have their own set of metrics,” he says. They will typically ask, did he have a great legislative record? Did the economy grow? Did he impact the Supreme Court? Did he change the executive branch, add new cabinet posts? Did he wage and win a popular war? Did he give us soaring rhetoric?

According to Wead, the problem with such analysis is that historians and academics cheat. “They can be agonizingly subjective. By their own standards George W. Bush was a great president. He could check off every box except one. And John F. Kennedy was a failed president who only delivered soaring rhetoric. But historians despise George W. Bush and they love Kennedy.

If the 1992 Clinton political machine was right, “It’s the economy stupid,” then, according to Wead, Donald Trump has had a glorious first year. “The numbers are fragile and layered with nuance, but one can argue that he has done in one year what Obama could not do in eight. And much of it was won by his contagious, outrageous, positive attitude.”

To paraphrase FDR, “the only thing we had to hope for was hope, itself.”
