Reisterstown, United States – August 25, 2018 /PressCable/ —
Many dream of leaving their day to day grind behind for a luxury vacation, traveling to luxurious destinations, first class, and staying in five star hotels without having to worry about how pay for it.
For one Baltimore family, this dream has not only become a reality, but they’ve made it apart of their lives.
They didn’t do it by hitting the lottery, they did it by simply traveling smart.
So smart, that Bertaut and Alexis Tchuise were able to go on trips to destinations like the Maldives, via a $31,000 first class flight and only paying $100 out of pocket. During this trip they were also able to stay six nights at the $2,000/per night Park Hyatt Maldives for less than $500 total. In just the past two and a half years, this couple has traveled to more than 25 countries and has only spent $8,105 on what amounts to over $279,274 worth of flights and hotels. That represents an enormous savings of over $271,169.
This was all made possible due to a relatively new U.S. phenomenon called travel hacking. This is the practice of strategically planning trips and maintaining multiple Frequent Flyer miles and points accounts. As balances accumulate over time, these savvy travelers are able to redeem the miles and points for countless valuable rewards all over the world. This process allows travelers to take luxurious trips all over the world on very small budgets.
Bertaut and Alexis didn’t start out as a couple, popping champagne bottles in the first class of Emirates flights.
Bertaut Tchuise grew up in the capital city of Cameroon, Yaounde, in a household with a strong family atmosphere and heavily influenced by various world cultures. He would listen to Western pop culture records with his uncles and wonder what it is like to see these places referenced in some of his favorite movies and songs.
Alexis grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana and has been traveling for as long as she can remember. Her family mostly took road trips visiting almost every one of the 50 states. Her passion for travel was solidified by one of her favorite trips driving from her hometown of Indiana to Arizona.
Bertaut and Alexis met while in college and connected with their love of travel.
Their first taste of “affordable luxury travel” was on their honeymoon to Mexico.
They stayed at the Fiesta Americana and were able to strategically bundle the trip package and save money by participating in timeshare meetings for free breakfast and experiences.
From that point on, traveling smart to luxury destinations, getting maximum value on a minimal budget, and building family memories that will last a lifetime has been a yearly tradition for them. Now as parents, they enjoy literally sharing the world with their kids and they are grateful to have a process that allows them to do so at rates that are simply unbelievable to most people.
After saving over $271,000 in total travel expenses, this couple is on a quest to share their experiences and their knowledge with other family travelers via their luxury family travel blog WorldTravelAdventurers.com
Bertaut and Alexis agreed to sit down with us to answer a few of our questions in regard to their extraordinary experiences, their most memorable moments , and whether they really think this lifestyle is achievable for anyone.
Q: What key mistake(s) do you think most new family travel hackers tend to make?
“Getting in over their heads with the credit card game and not being able to make the purchase requirements in order to get the travel rewards or not being able to pay off their credit cards every month and bleeding money away on interest. Failing to purchase the appropriate amount of travel insurance prior to their trips to cover things like lost and stolen luggage and medical expenses that can get very expensive.”
Q: After successfully planning and going on countless trips with your family, what would you consider the biggest family travel budgeting mistakes that others can learn from?
“Not planning for extra unexpected expenses in the budget like parking at hotels (which can get very expensive in big cities), tolls on road trips (we spent over $200 in tolls in 24 hours in Japan), hidden added costs to car rental agreements (like extra insurance in Costa Rica which was required but not included in our original price that almost doubled our car rental price for the week).
Q: What is the simplest method you know for family travelers to save money while experiencing luxury accommodations?
“Select hotel brands with a Global footprint, generous perks for their members, and loyalty programs where you can transfer points from credit cards like Hyatt, Hilton, or Starwood. Become loyal to the chain and join the hotel’s reward program to earn perks like free breakfast, free parking, free room upgrades, access to lounges, etc. We love staying at Hyatt properties because our Hyatt Globalist status always gets us so many fantastic freebies that save us tons of money. With our Hyatt credit cards (one for each of us), we earn reward nights for free hotel stays to make the savings go further. “
Q: What was the best hotel you have stayed in and how much did you save?
” Park Hyatt Maldives, which we’ve visited twice and have saved over $35,000 by using Hyatt points and reward nights “
Q: What’s your secret to making the extraordinary process to pulling off transcontinental vacations with two younger children.
“To successfully travel hack as a family of 4, we have to plan long in advance and be flexible. Flying across the world with young kids is so much easier when you’re flying in premium cabins and everyone can get decent sleep. Then we hit the ground running and exploring and wear the kids out for bedtime. “
