Airports are expecting record travelers this Thanksgiving. Be prepared by getting to the airport early. There are other useful tips to smooth your journey.

Record travelers are expected this Thanksgiving. This applies whether a person is traveling by auto or air. A little preparation will help ensure easier travel.

Be prepared for busy airports if you are flying this Thanksgiving. Airlines are expecting an estimated 28.5 million people to fly. Be sure to be there at least 2 hours early (or more) to go through TSA checks. If it is an international flight, add an hour to that time. Plus, remember your picture ID or passport.

If a person is traveling by car, it make take up to four times the normal time to get through busy metropolitan areas. AAA estimates that 54.3 million people will travel 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving. They list some of the expected worst congestion for cities and expected delay times at their site.

Besides getting to airports early and planning alternative routes instead of going through heavily congested metropolitan areas, there are some other things that can make the Thanksgiving trip more enjoyable.

If a person plans on taking Christmas gifts to the destination, it is best to leave the gifts unwrapped. Airport security will unwrap them. A traveler should plan instead to wrap those gifts at the destination, or ship the gifts. Particularly if the toy is a toy plastic gun or sword, it should be shipped, so there is no fuss at the airport.

For travelers who are expecting to bring some gifts back on the return journey, it is best to leave the suitcase about 1/3 empty so there will be space for those gifts on the return flight.

Travelers must always be mindful of toiletries. Liquids must be 3.4 oz. or less. All creams, toothpastes, shampoos, etc., must fit into a one quart zip-top bag. If there are liquid medications, it is necessary to inform the TSA officer. These can be screened separately.
