This is the third book Bey has authored. The book was written with the aim in mind to inspire young people to get excited about the wonderful world of capoeira.. There’s also particular excitement about this launch because it is the author’s first collaboration with JJ Richards. Richards is the bass player who plays many bands, most notably the Oakland super group, The Coup. This is Richards’s first time illustrating a children’s book.

The Capoeira Song sets its main focus on exploring the Afro-Brazilian art form, Capoeira. Sometimes a dance, and other times a martial art, Capoeira engages the participant physically, mentally, and spiritually. The Capoeira Song describes this immersive experience with wonder and delight.. The Capoeira Song is being released by Divine World Publishing.

Dr. Simel Bey has played and studied Capoeira for over twelve years. The Capoeira Song book has been a work of love that Simel has been waiting to share with the world for a long time. Simel is a husband, father to four extraordinary children, Doctor of Chinese Medicine, and Author. This is Simel’s third children’s book.

JJ Richards has played capoeira for more than ten years. He is a professional musician, performer, and father to a beautiful son.

Both the author and illustrator’s passion for Capoeira and deep desire to share the Capoeira experience to their own children helped shape the creation of this book.

When asked about why they wrote the book, Bey said: “I want to inspire people to want to find out about Capoeira for themselves as well as pay homage to those who came before me.”

Bey has hopes that more people, and especially the next generation of young people, get to experience the many gifts that Capoeira bring… songs, movement, and a very deep tradition that is a also a way of life.. This positive outlook from the author and illustrator is certainly testament to their optimism considering some of the mishaps during the books creation. At one point they thought that the book would never get done. “Life took over, and the book ended up taking over six years to be published.” they said..

In a recent interview, the author made a point of thanking all the “little” future “Capoeiristas” of the world, saying: “I would also like to thank my wife and my children for supporting me through all of it.”
