When undergoing a dental implant surgery, the recovery time varies based on how the procedure went, how well the patient takes care of themselves after the surgery, and how the body reacts to the implant. Most recoveries take roughly five to seven days and many patients can return to work the day after the surgery.

Once the surgery has been completed, bleeding or redness is common over the next 24 hours. This can be controlled by biting on a gauze pad placed on the wound. Gauze pads should be replaced every 30 minutes and used for a maximum of three hours.

Swelling is common as well. To treat swelling, an ice pack can be applied to the swollen area. Apply the ice in 30-minute increments during the first 24 hours after surgery.

When recovering from dental implant surgery, it is important to pay attention to diet and drink plenty of fluids. Soft foods can be eaten the day of surgery, but hot foods and liquids should be avoided. A standard recovery process allows for the patient to return to a normal diet one to two days after the surgery.
