Beltsville, United States – June 25, 2019 /PressCable/ —
Beltsville, MD – Norman S. Thomas, President of Normans S. Thomas Insurance Agency, Inc., located in Beltsville, MD reminds all Marylanders that the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA), is currently rolling out new guidelines and compliance requirements that will impact all Maryland Licensed Drivers and Maryland Identification card holders across the state.
Norman Thomas, who has been a licensed State Farm Insurance Agent for over 32 years, advises that due to the federal REAL ID Act, a law that was passed by Congress back in 2005 as a result of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses.
The Act established bare minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. Effective October 1, 2020, every American state and territory adult resident will need to present a REAL ID compliant license or ID card, or another acceptable form of identification, in order to gain access to most Federal facilities, enter nuclear power plants, or even to board a commercial aircraft.
In preparation for this approaching compliance deadline, the State of Maryland is in the process of contacting thousands of Maryland drivers and Maryland ID card holders directly via U.S. Mail and in some cases, internet email, to advise them that they need to make a physical appointment with a MDOT MVA branch in order to present certain documents that are now being required in order to become Real ID compliant and to be issued a new Maryland State Driver’s License or Maryland Identification card.
Maryland drivers who do not comply and properly satisfy the federal REAL ID requirements face the risk of having their Maryland Driver’s License recalled by the MDOT MVA making their physical driver’s license card invalid. And while they are still a licensed driver, if they should get pulled over by a law enforcement officer, their actual physical driver’s license will be confiscated.
The REAL ID documents that will be required by the MDOT MVA to update Maryland Driver’s Licenses and Maryland Identification cards include proof of age and identity such as an original birth certificate, U.S. Passport (valid or expired less than 5 years); proof of social security number such as an original social security card, W-2 form or Social Security Administration Benefits Statement Form SSA-1099; and 2 separate documents to prove actual residency in the State of Maryland such as a vehicle registration card, bank account statement or utility bill with the drivers name and current residential address.
