In the 12 months to May 2020, more than 81,000 people died of an overdose, the highest number ever recorded in a 12-month period. The number of deaths from the British coronavirus rose to 26097, with more than 6,500 people dying. By comparison, opioid-related deaths in Massachusetts rose from 0.011 in 2012 to 0.011 in 2014. The provisional number of drug overdose deaths is based on death certificates received and processed by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) prior to the stated cut-off date. The preliminary death figures presented in this data visualization refer to the 12-month period ending this month (defined as the number of deaths that occurred in the month in which the period ended, as indicated by a 1: 1 ratio between drug or drug-related deaths).

The percentage of records and type of death reported as pending investigation is used to predict the census’s preliminary forecast for all drug overdoses within a 12-month period. If a jurisdiction identifies less than 1% of all records as “pending investigation,” the preliminary data may be undervalued, and therefore the estimate of drug overdose deaths occurring in the fourth quarter of 2015 is lower than the actual estimate of deaths over the same period, in part due to under-reporting.
Previous research has suggested these deaths are likely linked to the use of fentanyl and heroin, which were manufactured illegally. Drug overdose deaths are synthetic opioids that are not methadone and can include multiple medications. When a drug death is described with a particular drug, a single death can include more than one category. For example, deaths involving heroin and fentanyl would include a number of heroin-related drug deaths, and a total of several hundred deaths from synthetic opioid overdoses, but not all of them from synthetic narcotics.

If the percentage of records reported as “pending investigations” in a particular country is high, the number of overdose deaths is likely to be underestimated. The higher the percentage of notifications of pending investigations and the higher this percentage has been in recent months, the more likely this percentage is to be underestimated, as it has tended to be higher in recent months.

If a jurisdiction identifies more than 1% of records as “pending investigation,” the provisional number of drug overdose deaths can underestimate the final number of drug deaths by up to 30%. As a result, preliminary counts include deaths in which the deceased was not a US resident, and as a result, drug deaths are subject to random fluctuations and can be underestimated based on preliminary data compared to final data. The discrepancy is typically small, typically between those still under investigation and those whose cause of death is unknown in the final data.
