Gamma Kids, the all-new clothing line designed exclusively for premature babies in NICU, is live on global crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and a breakout crowdfunding success story having already surpassed their initial raise goal
Babies born prematurely often mean long stays in the NICU department after birth. Unfortunately for these babies, there is often very little clothing designed to not only fit their small bodies, but also remain functional, while also keeping babies looking stylish and cute.
“Our son Valentino was born 10 weeks premature at 2lbs 13oz and we struggled to find clothing that fit him. During his 2 month stay in the NICU, this was a source of stress for me as a new mother,” says founder and creator Gabrielle Cols Azocar on the inspiration behind the project. “I spent hours on end looking for outfits for my son in the NICU, nothing took into consideration the hospital care and constant handling of babies in a hospital. Inspired by my son’s 50 days stay in the NICU, I created Gamma Kids, a brand of 100% organic cotton onesies and caps designed for micro-preemie and preemie babies.
Gamma Kids has been designed from the ground up for long hospital stays and with feedback from NICU nurses and NICU parents. All garments are designed 20% smaller than most name brand premature onesies on the market and were created to accommodate monitors, blood pressure cuffs, and IVs. This thoughtful design allows parents and nurses ease to perform “cares” on the baby, i.e. changing diapers, changing out cables, measuring temperature, and cleansing.
The kimono-style onesies are also easier to put on, requiring less handling of the baby and stress-free dressing. Each onesie also comes with a matching cap— all designed to fit micro-preemie (up to 4 lbs) and preemie (4-6 lbs) babies. To launch, the sets will be available in two solid colors and three prints; Pretty in Pink, Cool Grey, The Artist, The Dreamer, and The Academic.
“NICU babies are attached to medical equipment 24/7. The preemie clothes that are currently on the market do not take this into consideration. In our eyes, every baby, big or small, preemie or full-term, deserves to be properly dressed, even when hooked up to machines,” adds Cols Azocar. At Gamma Kids we create garments that are appropriate for the NICU setting and can be worn easily by the babies, and are easy for both the medical team and parents to put on. I have created a product with 100% GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) Certified Organic Cotton, with fun, colorful and unique prints that will bring light and color to families in the NICU.”
Gamma Kids is currently live and available to support on Kickstarter: www.kickstarter.com/projects/gammakids/clothing-for-premature-babies-in-the-nicu. For every $25 pledge towards the campaign goal, Gamma Kids will also donate a premature onesie to a NICU in need.
