Canada Post partners with Westward Industries for its EV future

Ottawa, Canada – July 14, 2022

The red and white Canada Post trucks have become icons of every neighborhood throughout Ottawa and the rest of the country. However, there’s always been a clear issue that these trucks create; they are massive contributors to carbon emissions. Consequently, Canada Post has made a commitment to going green, hoping to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. At the heart of this will be the transition to an all-electric fleet of vehicles – which should happen by 2040. The transformation is already beginning, with Canada Post partnering with Westward Industries for its EV future.

A Low-Speed EV Pilot

Earlier in June 2022, Canada Post showcased its new electric vehicles, including the ones it is currently piloting. The MAX-EV pilot vehicle was purchased from Westward Industries, offering zero-emission delivery. It is classified as a low-speed vehicle, with a maximum speed limit of 40kph(25mph). Westward offers 4 different Lithium-Ion battery packs, the 15kwh pack was chosen which offers up to 125 km’s of range (excluding any additional accessory draw). The vehicle boasts over a 1000lb total payload – and can tow 1500lbs.  Charge on Level 1 or Level 2, controlled by a sophisticated on board battery management system and charger.

This EV will be piloted for the next year to see how it fairs on common delivery routes when collecting and delivering packages. If all goes according to plan, Westward Industries would be in place to provide as many electric vehicles as possible to slowly phase out the old Canada Post vans from at least large congested city centers.

Improving The EV Infrastructure Of Canada Post

Canada Post also recognizes it must improve the general EV infrastructure of its company to make these changes a reality. While the vehicles provided by Westward Industries can offer up to 125 km on a charged battery, heavy cargo and winter heating can reduce range. As such, new charging stations will need to be deployed to different departments and distribution centers, ensuring that every vehicle maintains the optimal level of charge.

It is a big commitment that will need a sizeable investment, but Canada Post is determined to reduce carbon emissions and eventually become a net-zero company. Westward Industries will be at the forefront of this transition and strive to be a great partner of Canada Post in supporting its EV future.

About Westward Industries

Westward Industries is a manufacturer of task-specific utility vehicles proudly based in North America.  Westward vehicles are largely used by fleets within the municipal and University market. Westward began in the early 1990’s when the founder developed a compact, rugged, one-person patrol vehicle that became a staple of the New York Police Department’s fleet of vehicles.   In 2012 the current owners, the Franz brothers, acquired Westward Industries with a renewed spirit and energy for propelling the company forward. Building upon their family’s history of engineering, vehicle repair, and entrepreneurism; the brothers were well-suited to improve Westward’s internal production efficiency and achieve their goal of expanding into the emerging electric-powered vehicle market.  Westward has developed an electric drive system with strong long-lasting Lithium-Ion batteries. They now proudly offer this system for all Westward vehicles – including their newest MAX-EV, which is a versatile 4-wheeled low speed vehicle.
