Youth for Human Rights Advocates in the Nation’s Capital Walk for Human Rights Education as a Tool for Peace

The iconic Lincoln Memorial was the start of the walk which ended at the World War II Memorial on the National Mall to promote the urgent need to educate youth in their human rights

In honor of the International Day of Peace, Youth for Human Rights International’s DC Chapter spearheaded a Human Rights Walk, which included people from nine countries. The walk started at the Lincoln Memorial and went to the World War II Memorial to promote the need for broad education in the human rights per the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. In 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.

In addition to Youth for Human Rights, the walk was joined by the Military Children’s Six Foundation and the US Institute of Diplomacy and Human Rights.

“This walk, held during the UN General Assembly and following Peace Day, is a powerful reminder that real change begins with awareness and action. Together, we are shaping a future where every individual’s rights are respected and upheld,” Dr. Isabelle Vladoiu, Director of the US Institute of Diplomacy and Human Rights, commented.

Col. Adrienne Schaffer (Ret.), Founder of the Military Children’s Six Foundation explained her reason for joining the campaign to promote human rights education saying, “As an organization that champions advocacy and leadership development for military children and youth, we aim to inform, educate, and empower them to be ready to self-advocate, stand up for others, and lead from their current positions.  By providing comprehensive education on human rights and child rights, we enable them to become influential voices against abuses in this geopolitical landscape.  

“As these young individuals mature into roles of leadership or influence, whether within their home countries or abroad, they can act as change agents and ambassadors for human and child rights. They will have the knowledge and skills to identify and expose abuses, voice their dissent, and leverage their influence to address the fundamental causes of human rights and child rights violations, atrocities, and injustices. Through the cultivation of empathy, they will be prepared to demand and direct meaningful change.”

The UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was written and passed by the UN in 1948 right at the end of World War II. Pledging to work together to prevent future world conflicts and wars, the UN agreed to 30 rights in the UDHR.

Youth for Human Rights works to teach the UDHR to youth around the world. Youth for Human Rights has created short public service announcements on each of the 30 rights outlined in the UDHR. These PSA’s feature youth actors in youth setting such as school, basketball courts, and homes. The teaching of these rights helps to ensure youth know what their own rights are as well as learning to respect the rights of others.

Human rights are the foundation of a just society, and protecting them is our responsibility uniting us in purpose. By standing together, we elevate our voices and strengthen the fight for a world where every individual is treated with respect and dignity.”
