Researchers at ASU Discover Anti-Viral Plant
Researchers at ASU studying the effects of rhodiola rosea discovered that it inhibited the ability of viruses to multiply, resulting in protection from viral infection in subjects involved in the study.

A revolutionary new study at Appalachian State University Human Performance Laboratory on the North Carolina Research Campus, ASU, has discovered health benefits in the plant Rhodiola rosea. The study was published in Frontiers of Nutrition and findings report that Rhodiola rosea may protect against viral infections.
Previous studies suggest Rhodiola rosea has powerful natural components that are helpful for symptoms of depression and may increase sexual function, as well as increase energy and weight loss. But this study specifically focused on the effect of Rhodiola rosea on marathon runners, who are susceptible to viral illnesses, including respiratory tract infections, especially post competition.
David Nieman, DrPh, FACSM and director at ASU explains, “Basically after heavy exertion bacteria and viruses can multiply at a higher rate than normal due to factors in the serum like stress hormones and inflammatory cytokines. This is why runners are six times more likely to get sick after a marathon.”
Researchers found that the natural components in Rhodioala rosea influenced this process. “We showed that in those who used Rhodiola rosea the virus could not multiply, meaning it was acting as a countermeasure”, Nieman said. The study methods involved marathons runners who were given 600 mg doses of Rhodiola rosea every day for one month prior to a marathon. Published results found that the athletes maintained protection from viral infection for 12 hours after the physically challenging event. Researchers are hopeful this discovery will also be beneficial for maintaining positive health for athletes in other fields, as well as the general population.
Nieman optimistically described the value of the discovery, “We are producing some of the first human studies showing plant polyphenols – the naturally occurring chemicals in fruits and vegetables that give them their colors like purple, red and yellow – work with the immune system to help clear viruses and keep their ability to multiply under control.”
