The Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists comments on increasing reports of women seeking hair transplant surgery for their hair loss.

The Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists (www.CanadianHair.ca), a Toronto-based organization offering hair loss treatment for over 25 years, is addressing the increasing numbers of women seeking out hair transplants.

While hair transplants have typically been a treatment used by men experiencing male pattern baldness, more women are now seeking out the hair restoration surgery. Some hair loss surgeons are reporting that over half of their practice is now made up of women. “Hair transplants are the most effective hair loss treatment we have today, and women are starting to take note of that,” says Ken Robson, founder of the Canadian Institute for Hair and Scalp Specialists. “The majority of our patients are still men, but we’re seeing more and more women express interest in the treatment.”

While many men suffer from thinning hair and balding as they get older, it is common for women to also experience age-related hair loss. Despite this, most hair loss treatments in the past have been geared towards men.

“What we may be seeing is that more women are now speaking out and taking action when it comes to their hair loss,” says Robson. “Hair loss is not any more common with women than it was before, but it’s been completely neglected by the hair industry. Luckily, many of the same treatments that work for men also work for women.”

Women can experience hair loss due to a wide range of issues, including fluctuations in hormones and autouimmune conditions. However, just like with men, genetics play a big role in female hair loss.

“As women get older, it is very common for their hair to noticeably thin,” says Robson. “Men usually experience hair loss in a pattern, whereas women will often have an overall thinning of their hair. When it comes to hair loss caused by genetics, supplements can only have so much of an effect. Hair transplants are really the only treatment that can restore a large volume of hair.”

Hair transplants involve surgically removing hair follicles from parts of the head with a dense amount of hair and reattaching them in balding or thinning spots. Hair transplants are the only treatment that can result in permanent, growing hair.

“The treatment can be more difficult to do for women,” notes Robson. “The hair-loss pattern in men is easier to predict, and there are typically spots on the back of the head that always have a good amount of hair. With women, they may experience overall thinning, so it can be harder to find those dense spots of hair.”

Nonetheless, Robson notes that the treatment can be very effective for women and should be considered by any women suffering from thinning hair. “It really depends on your type of hair loss,” he says. “Some women may experience mild hair loss that can be treated with supplements or lotions, while others may really need a hair transplant to correct the problem. The most important thing is to see a hair specialist who can determine what the best treatment option is for you.”
