New Xarelto Lawsuit Alleges That Drug Caused Life-Threatening Internal Bleed

January 04, 2016 – – BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on details of another lawsuit filed against Xarelto manufacturers Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a subdivision of Johnson & Johnson) and Bayer AG initially filed in the Eastern District of New York. The suit was filed by a woman from Texas who alleges that Xarelto manufacturers failed to warn her and other consumers about the dangerous risks associated with their anticoagulant. Her complaint was filed in federal court under case number 1:14-cv-04524.

Details of the lawsuit documents show that the woman was prescribed Xarelto by her physician in order to prevent stroke or blood clot risks due to her atrial fibrillation condition. This is a common heart condition which generally makes the heart beat more rapidly than usual. The plaintiff had used Xarelto for just 5 months before suffering from a life-threatening internal bleed, which has now left her with long-term medical needs.

Xarelto gained approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2011. It was thought of as revolutionary because it did not require regular physician monitoring, adjustments, or special diets, as other blood thinners did. Initial excitement over the drug quickly dissipated however, as consumers started to realize that Xarelto had been released to the market without a corresponding antidote. This is an incredibly dangerous thing, and still today, no antidote has been developed.

Having no available antidote means that if a patient with Xarelto in their system becomes injured, even slightly, and begins to bleed, physicians may be unable to counter the effects of the medication and get their blood to clot. In these cases, doctors are required to resort to extreme life-saving measures, such as surgeries or blood transfusions in an attempt to keep the patient alive. Surgeries are used if blood pools internally, to relieve pressure.

Patients who use traditional blood thinners do not encounter this issue. They have an antidote available through vitamin K. Therefore, when a patient using a traditional blood thinner becomes injured and bleeds, physicians treat them with vitamin K to counteract the effects of the drug and allow their blood to clot. This antidote can save lives.

Today, Xarelto lawsuits, similarly allege that the drug causes dangerous uncontrollable bleeding, and federal cases number around 2,200. The cases have been consolidated by the JPML to form multidistrict litigation number 2592 and were transferred under a single court in the Eastern District of Louisiana.

As the cases await trial, Attorney Joseph Osborne is attempting to ensure that everyone affected by the blood thinner can have the opportunity to evaluate their legal rights. Patients who used Xarelto and later suffered adverse health effects may be entitled to significant compensation. At this time, Attorney Osborne is offering free legal consultations to affected individuals.
