Alibaba to Kick off Singles Day Global Shopping Festival

October 30, 2019 – – Sunsella, an online store specializing in kitchenware based out of Las Vegas, Nevada, has announced that Chinese e-commerce powerhouse Alibaba has begun their promotional push for their Global Shopping Festival. The promotion for the festival, which kicked off on October 21st, 2019, is expected to end with a celebrity gala and a countdown on November 10th, leading into Singles’ Day on November 11th, 2019.

According to Wikipedia, Singles’ Day is “…a shopping holiday popular among young Chinese people that celebrate their pride in being single. The date, November 11th (11/11), was chosen because the number “1” resembles an individual who is alone. The holiday has also become a popular date to celebrate relationships, with over 4,000 couples being married in Beijing on this date in 2011, compared to an average of 700 a day.”

Since Singles’ Day’s beginnings in the early 1990s, the “holiday” has grown from a celebration of single young people in China to a billion-dollar day of sales for Alibaba, the nation’s biggest online retailer. In 2018, the event brought in over $31 billion in sales, a new record for 20-year old Alibaba. The day is considered to be four times bigger than Black Friday, America’s biggest shopping day.

Mike Law from Sunsella says, “It’s astonishing to see the growth of the Chinese market, especially over the past twenty years. Alibaba’s ingenuity with making the holiday their own with a big lead up to Singles’ Day only adds more excitement for consumers and retailers. They’ve included so many retailers that it truly has become a day for global commerce.”

For the 2019 event, Alibaba expects that 500 million users will be shopping on Singles’ Day, about 100 million more than 2018. Alibaba says the growth will come from less-developed markets, where they say 70% of their new yearly active customers come from. The retailer says that about 200,000 brands will be participating in the event, will over one million products available for consumers. Among them, 400 foreign brands will be debuting 3,000 new products exclusively on Alibaba.

In fact, according to Alibaba, presales for new products launching on the holiday have already picked up. An estimated $14.1 million in sales was reported within the first 10 minutes of the latest holiday being announced. Many people who are buying online are willing to pay for quality products, Alibaba states. Social media influencers, referral programs, and special edition items are driving many new consumers to participate, the retailer notes.

Alibaba also says they are focusing on making Single’s Day 2019 a Green initiative. They will be powering their servers with renewable energy, as well as energy-saving measures such as using liquid-powered cooling systems for their servers on 11/11. In all, Alibaba expects to be saving around 200,000 kilowatt hours of energy on the biggest shopping day in the world.

“We expect Singles’ Day 2019 to be the biggest shopping day in history,” Law says. “With the Internet in China reaching more and more small cities, along with storefronts more capable of personalizing the customer experience, the potential growth for many brands during the event is huge. It’s going to be a grand celebration for both consumers and brands alike, and we expect a lot of records to be broken on 11/11.”

Sunsella’s commitment to bringing high-quality kitchenware to their customers has been noticed on Amazon. The company’s leakproof bento boxes, silicone egg & pancake rings, and iron potholder sets have all been chosen as Amazon Choice products, and the many positive reviews from customers showcase the high quality of their products.

In a five-star review of the silicone rings on Sunsella’s website, Doc says, “Baked perfect 4-inch hamburger buns using this product. Easy clean up. Previous rings I have used were hard to clean and tended to stick to the dough.”
