Amid the Pandemic Florida Struggles From Drug Abuse Increase

The drug abuse in Florida is skyrocketing and the pandemic is to thank. Many experts see couples falling apart and they are point towards staying inside.

There are over 24 million Americans who take and abuse illegal drugs, and Florida contributes to those figures. The state has greatly expanded the definition of fentanyl – related substances such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and cocaine. These substances are considered controlled substances under the Florida Drug Control Act and the Drug Abuse Prevention Act. Specifically, a recent study showed that the number of overdose deaths in Florida due to prescription painkillers, heroin and fentanyl increased by 70 percent compared to 2019. People who died of drug overdoses in Palm Beach County during that period were more than twice as likely to die of drug overdoses as Broward County residents. Residents of Pinellas County were three times more likely to die of drug overdoses than residents of other parts of the state. Addiction treatment centers are being proactive in promoting inpatient and outpatient programs to help struggling addicts. In Sarasota County, which includes the North Harbor of Sarasota and Venice, three times as many people died of drug overdoses as residents in other parts of the state. Residents in the area were more than twice as likely to have died of an overdose as in any other part of Florida. In terms of drug overdose deaths, Palm Beach County was the deadliest in Okeechobee County. It ranked 10th in overdose deaths in 2016, according to the Florida Department of Health, and is the second deadliest county in the country for drug deaths.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has warned that opioid overdose rates are high in the Sunshine State. In 2016, it ranked eleventh in overdose deaths, in part because the county itself has not seen a reduction in drug overdoses in recent years.

Marijuana use is also more common in Jacksonville than in Florida in general, with 8 percent reporting use last month at the time of the 2016 survey, compared with 7 percent across the state, according to the Florida Department of Health. Marijuana use was also less common among Jacksonville residents in 2016 than in recent years. A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that 11,910 drug-related deaths, including prescription drugs, were reported in our state at the end of 2016. The program reported that more than 4,600 people died of drug overdoses in 2015, up from 3,800 in 2014 and 2,500 in 2013.

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) released a report that more Floridians die of drug overdoses in Jacksonville than in other parts of the state, suggesting a massive shift in the region. The number of cases where the deceased had cocaine in their system rose from 1,834 in 2015 to 2,882 in 2016, and 97% of those deaths were directly attributed to the drug. Deaths from heroin and cocaine increased by 78% and 52% respectively, according to a 2016 Florida Department of Health report. More than half of all deaths involving heroin were found in Florida, up from 46% in 2014 and 44% the year before.
