Andy Moores certified to perform 3rd generation TATE elbow replacements
He became the first orthopaedic surgeon in the South of England to achieve this status.
United Kingdom – August 16, 2024 —
Dog owners hoping to help their pets finally overcome ongoing elbow issues can now select the most advanced elbow replacement surgeries available at the Moores Orthopaedic Clinic in Basingstoke as surgeon Andy Moores is now qualified to perform the 3rd generation TATE surgery.
Moores joins an exclusive club of highly professional orthopaedic surgeons
Renowned orthopaedic surgeon Andy Moores, of the Moores Orthopaedic Clinic, was invited to participate in the inaugural TATE technology course for third-generation implant procedures held in Boston, US, in June. This invitation recognises his expertise and dedication to orthopaedic surgery, making him one of a very small number of surgeons worldwide certified to perform third-generation TATE elbow replacements and the only surgeon in the South of England.
Elbow replacement surgery, despite advancements in both the implant and technique, remains a complex procedure with a demanding rehabilitation process. However, for the right candidates, elbow replacement offers the potential for significant improvement in joint function and pain relief, transforming the lives of dogs that would otherwise suffer from permanent discomfort.
With over 20 years of experience in elbow replacement surgery, Andy has witnessed the evolution of this technology. The TATE Elbow, which was used in the 2010s at Andy’s previous clinic, marked a significant advancement in the field from the IOWA State system before that. Though it was an improvement, issues such as implant loosening posed challenges for some dogs. Now, the TATE system has undergone a complete redesign, resulting in a vastly improved third-generation implant, which was introduced in late 2020 and remains available only to a select group of surgeons.
Surgeons who have performed 3rd generation procedures since then have reported far lower complication rates than the 20-25% rate seen in old elbow systems. As well as performing the surgery, Andy is now perfectly positioned to determine whether a patient is a good candidate for the procedure.
Andy continues to perform surgeries at his independent orthopaedic-only referral practice, the Moores Orthopaedic Clinic. His clinic is dedicated to providing cutting-edge orthopaedic solutions and maintaining the highest standards of veterinary care.
“The advancements in the TATE Elbow system represent a significant leap forward in veterinary orthopaedic surgery,” explains Andy. “End-stage elbow osteoarthritis is a horrible condition which can leave dogs in chronic pain and with no good treatment options. Being certified to perform third-generation TATE elbow replacements allows us to offer our patients the most advanced treatment options available, giving them the best chance for a pain-free, functional life.”
