While horse riding remains a popular pastime, a skill that is mastered much less often is the art of horseshoeing. Fortunately, thanks to the Arkansas Horseshoeing School in Dardanelle, expert training in how to become a farrier is still available from a family that has been involved in its instruction stretching back to the 1800s.
“If you are interested in how to be a farrier or going to a horseshoeing school you have a very rare and unique opportunity to receive a classic education in the art,” commented Paul Dorris, Jr. owner of the school. “We look forward to working with you and sharing our knowledge to help you become a master of the art of horseshoeing.”
According to the school they offer hands-on 8 to 24 week long courses well designed to prepare a person for a career as a Farrier. Advanced graduate courses are also available for those who would like to continue taking their horseshoeing school education to the next level. The school has won praise for both the quality of education and the teaching ability of the instructors.
New farrier courses for the last quarter of 2017 begin on Oct 3, Nov 7 and Dec 5. Space is limited, with a maximum of six students in each class to ensure the quality of instruction. Students under the age of 18 are welcome, with signed parental consent forms.
Graduate students of the course are offered assistance in finding an apprenticeship. Along with teaching horseshoeing, the business aspects of being a Farrier are also covered, along with important tips on staying healthy and safe while working in the trade.
Far from a “boy’s club” a number of female students graduate from courses each year.
Feedback for the school has been very positive.
Steve Sermersheim CJF TE, AWCF Middlefork Forge, recently said, “One of Paul’s recent graduates lives near me and helps us on occasion. He definitely received a strong foundation at AHS, from work ethic to sound fundamentals of Farriery.”
