As Talcum Powder Lawsuit Filings Grow, Sources Say Woman May Have Died From Talc Exposure

October 31, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a recent article by the Belfast Telegraph indicating that a 49-year-old woman may have died from being exposed to talcum powder.

The article states that the woman had suffered from health problems from a work accident in 1993 but had died because of foreign materials in her lungs. Her cause of death had been determined after a pathologist noticed needle-shaped silicate deposits in the woman’s spleen, liver, and lungs. The foreign deposits caused hypertension and the formation of fibroids, ultimately causing the woman’s death, the source stated.

Meanwhile, U.S. women have brought thousands of lawsuits against companies such as Johnson & Johnson claiming that talcum powder is dangerous because of its link to ovarian cancer. Johnson & Johnson has already lost two major lawsuits asserting these claims in which the company was forced to pay a settlement of $55 million and $72 million to plaintiffs. The women claim that after using the products for years for feminine hygiene purposes, they or a loved one developed ovarian cancer and, in some cases, have died.

Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder soared in popularity after 1892 when the director of scientific affairs Dr. Frederick B. Kilmer first invented a scented powder that was originally labeled “for toilet and nursery” according to the Huffington Post. Many women then started using it to sprinkle it in their underwear and genital area for freshening purposes. The powder was later discovered to cause problems, leading to the first case claiming the product causes ovarian cancer in 2009.
