Bel Marra Health (www.BelMarraHealth.com), a company that offers specially formulated vitamins and nutritional products, is weighing in on a study attributing hearing loss to mental health.

A recent study conducted by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) determined a correlation between hearing loss and potential mental health issues. (Source: Heather, L. “Mental Well Being Tightly Linked to Hearing Health,” The Hearing Journal, March 2016;

“This study brings to light the fact that people with moderate to severe hearing loss may in fact suffer from depression, anxiety and other mental health issues,” says Dr. Victor Marchione, spokesperson for Bel Marra Health. “These psychological issues could develop as a result of sudden hearing loss, especially if the hearing loss leads to social isolation or a deteriorated quality of life for that person.”

The NHANES study involved over 18,000 participants. Within the participants, the study showed that 11.4% of those who were moderately to severely depressed reported either a hearing impairment or having experienced some trouble hearing. About 4.9% said their hearing was excellent, and 7.1% described their hearing as good.

“There is a measurable difference between those who report having trouble with their hearing and being depressed and those who describe their hearing as good or excellent,” explains Dr. Marchione. “This is more proof that audiologists need to continue working closely with psychologists when diagnosing any hearing deficiencies to ensure they are giving proper diagnoses.”

Dr. Marchione goes on to say that doctors who diagnose a patient with hearing loss should keep an eye out for potential signs that a patient may be suffering from depression as well.

“People who go from being able to hear normally all their lives and then either suddenly or gradually begin to lose their hearing go through emotional stresses,” he elaborates. “They may not be depressed in the formal sense of the term, but that doesn’t mean they are not suffering mentally or psychologically. Adjusting to not hearing well can impact a person’s life significantly, and it’s important that everyone involved in the diagnosis understands this reality.”
