Centura Tile Weighs in on the Benefits of Installing Special Flooring in Healthcare Facilities
Centura Tile comments on the importance of utilizing proper flooring in healthcare facilities

Centura Tile (www.centura.ca), North America’s premier distributor of both residential and commercial floor and wall fashions, is urging architects and designers to remember the important role flooring can play in creating a healing environment.
As work is done to both build new healthcare facilities in Canada and to improve the infrastructure of existing ones, the importance of proper flooring is not something that should be forgotten in order to maximize benefits to both patients and staff. “There are the standard functional benefits to the right flooring choice—reduced noise and fewer slip-and-fall injuries, for instance,” Ross Keltie, the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Centura Tile explains. “But there are other benefits that are of particular concern to any healthcare environment ranging from mental and physical support to antibacterial properties.”
Keltie uses the AB Pure type of flooring to illustrate the point. It is available in sheet form, which allows the flooring to be laid flush with the wall and eliminates gaps where bacteria can hide out. The texture is soft but supportive, which eases strain on the feet and joints when walking. This makes it and other commercial healthcare flooring ideal for hospital staff who are constantly moving around the building, or for patients who may have ambulatory difficulties.
Mental health is naturally supported by a soothing colour palette, but healthcare flooring has an additional function that is not commonly taken advantage of. “Among the elderly, especially anyone dealing with Alzheimer’s or dementia, it is possible to get lost or confused,” notes Keltie. “Tile arrangements can be designed with wayfinding in mind. Arrows or footprints can serve as a guide to both welcome visitors and to help anyone who is lost to find their way back to a central location like the nurse’s station.”
Approaches like this can help a healthcare facility turn the flooring into another contributor to the healing environment, improving overall patient outcomes and staff well-being. For additional protection, there are brands such as Stonescape which feature no halogens, plasticizers, chlorines, PVC, or volatile organic compounds.
Centura Tile has been a staple of interior design throughout Canada since 1933. Its showroom hosts a wide selection of floor and wall tiles at affordable prices for both contractors and do-it-yourself homeowners.
