“There are the standard functional benefits to the right flooring choice—reduced noise and fewer slip-and-fall injuries, for instance,” Ross Keltie, the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Centura Tile explains. “But there are other benefits that are of particular concern to any healthcare environment ranging from mental and physical support to antibacterial properties.”
Keltie uses the AB Pure type of flooring to illustrate the point. It is available in sheet form, which allows the flooring to be laid flush with the wall and eliminates gaps where bacteria can hide out. The texture is soft but supportive, which eases strain on the feet and joints when walking. This makes it and other commercial healthcare flooring ideal for hospital staff who are constantly moving around the building, or for patients who may have ambulatory difficulties.
Mental health is naturally supported by a soothing colour palette, but healthcare flooring has an additional function that is not commonly taken advantage of. “Among the elderly, especially anyone dealing with Alzheimer’s or dementia, it is possible to get lost or confused,” notes Keltie. “Tile arrangements can be designed with wayfinding in mind. Arrows or footprints can serve as a guide to both welcome visitors and to help anyone who is lost to find their way back to a central location like the nurse’s station.”
Approaches like this can help a healthcare facility turn the flooring into another contributor to the healing environment, improving overall patient outcomes and staff well-being.
