Into the third month of the new year, China maintains its position as the top contributor to the Maldives’ tourist arrival markets, as disclosed in the latest weekly tourist arrival statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism on Thursday.
London, England, United Kingdom – March 16, 2024 —
China has once again emerged as the leading source of tourist arrivals in the Maldives, maintaining its top position into the third month of the new year, according to the Ministry of Tourism’s latest weekly tourist arrival statistics released on Thursday. This year saw a dynamic shift in the rankings, with Italy initially leading the arrival charts, shortly replaced by Russia, and now China clinching the top spot, capturing 12 percent of the market share with 58,912 arrivals by March 13. Russia now follows closely in second place, contributing 10 percent with 49,042 arrivals, while Italy holds the third position with 9.6 percent and 46,870 arrivals to date.
The fluctuating rankings highlight the competitive nature of Maldives’ tourism markets, with India, previously in the top three, now overtaken by China. Other significant contributors include the United Kingdom, Germany, India, France, the United States, Poland, and Switzerland, with Kazakhstan being replaced by Switzerland in the top source markets.
As of now, the Maldives has welcomed a total of 488,952 tourists since the beginning of the year, marking a 14 percent increase from the same period last year and showing significant growth from 2022. This surge in arrivals underscores the Maldives’ appeal as a premier destination for Maldives holidays, Maldives resorts, and Maldives honeymoons, offering an array of Maldives packages and Maldives all-inclusive experiences to international travellers.
January and February saw 192,385 and 217,392 arrivals respectively, with an additional 79,175 tourists landing at Velana International Airport (VIA) from March 1-13. The daily arrival average for 2024 is 6,698, with tourists staying for an average of eight days, indicating the enduring allure of Maldives hotels and resorts.
The Ministry of Tourism anticipates continuing this upward trajectory, with Minister Ibrahim Faisal highlighting the inauguration of the new year with the first tourist arrival ceremony at VIA. This event set a positive tone for 2024, reflecting the ministry’s ambition to diversify tourism markets and achieve this year’s arrival targets.
Since its inception in 1972, tourism in the Maldives has celebrated 50 years of welcoming travellers to its enchanting shores, drawn by its unparalleled beauty and luxurious hospitality.
