The Church of Scientology in Randburg today marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with an open house event aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and promoting community cooperation to address the growing drug problem among South African youth.

In partnership with the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, the event features a screening of the award-winning documentary “The Truth About Drugs,” followed by a training workshop and online course enrollment, Public Service Announcements and more. Attendees get to hear personal stories of drug addiction and recovery from former addicts.

Asthra Maximova, coordinator for the Foundation for a Drug-Free World in Africa, emphasized the importance of education in preventing drug abuse. “Our program has educated millions worldwide on the dangers of drugs. By providing factual information, we empower individuals to make informed decisions and live drug-free lives.”

The event aims to foster collaboration between community stakeholders to address the rising numbers of domestic drug cases, drug abuse, and crime in Randburg. The Church of Scientology in Randburg and the Foundation for a Drug-Free World are committed to continuing this work, providing resources and support to create a drug-free community.

“The scourge of drug abuse is a pressing issue in our community, and we are dedicated to working together to address it,” said Tony Peacock, Deputy Executive Director for the Church of Scientology in Randburg. “By providing a platform for education and awareness, we hope to inspire change and support those affected by drug abuse.”

The “Truth About Drugs” documentary and online course provide a comprehensive understanding of the dangers of drug abuse, covering topics such as the effects of drugs on the brain and body, the risks of addiction, and the impact on personal relationships and society as a whole.

Attendees at the event included community leaders, local residents, and representatives from law enforcement and social services organizations. All participants received a copy of the “Truth About Drugs” booklet and were encouraged to share the information with their families, friends, and communities.
