As windstorms and devastating tornadoes hit the Midwest last week, Churches of Scientology Disaster Response (CSDR) Volunteer Ministers (https://csdr-us.org) organized and deployed teams to Greenfield, Iowa, and Houston, Texas.
Much of Greenfield, Iowa, was destroyed by an EF4 tornado during its mile-long path. At least a dozen residents were injured and five were killed. In its aftermath dozens of government and VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) organizations responded, including CSDR volunteers. Each response group helped in their own way by cleaning up debris, removing downed trees with chain saws, feeding and sheltering those in need, and helping to organize the wealth of donations from around the state and country.
National VOAD (www.nvoad.org) is an association of more than 75 national nonprofit organizations and government partners that collaborate together to mitigate and alleviate the impact of disasters; provide a forum promoting cooperation, communication, coordination and collaboration; and foster effective delivery of services to communities affected by disaster.
In Houston, Texas, CSDR volunteers, using Crisis Clean Up, an open-source web-based platform that connects community relief organizations with disaster survivors, helped with debris removal and other chores.
Manifesting their motto of “Something can be done about it,” the Volunteer Minister teams, in their signature yellow shirts, worked alongside other organizations helping to bring hope and resilience to the survivors.
Rev. Susan Taylor, National Director of CSDR, observed, “The essence of volunteerism in the United States is powerful not only spiritually but also in deed. Hundreds, if not thousands, of volunteers work daily someplace in the country to help those devastated by storms and bring them hope and help. CSDR is honored to work side by side with these disaster volunteer organizations, and state and FEMA government officials to bring relief.”
